Christmas Almost on the River Parade The town of Gainesville will hold its third Annual Christmas Almost on the River Parade on Dec. 17. All floats and vendors are welcome. UWA Kicks off Christmas Season with Choir Concert The Sumter County Fine Arts Council and the University of West Alabama Fine Arts Department will usher in the 2011 Christmas season with the annual UWA Christmas Concert Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Bibb Graves Auditorium. “We promise something traditional, something new, and something astonishingly beautiful to enjoy as you get into the spirit,” said Willie Williams, director of choral activities at UWA. This free event will feature performances of secular and sacred music by the University of West Alabama Choir, as well as music from other special guests, including Patrice Moncell and Amy Hill Lawson. Born in Meridian, Miss., Moncell sang alto with the New England Vocal Ensemble at their Carnegie Hall presentation of The Mozart Requiem and Bethoven's Mass in C major with The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. She was twice honored as female vocalist of the year by the Jackson Music Awards and was celebrated as Mississippi's Rhythm and Blues Diva in 2002. The vocal artistry of Moncell can be heard on her debut release "Woman Enough" and on Grammy Award-winning jazz legend Casandra Wilson's new "Belly of the Sun" release on Blue Note/Capitol Records, where Moncell can be heard singing in English and Portuguese. Lawson is a soprano from Huntsville. She studied voice with Dr. Susan Fleming and graduated this year from the University of Alabama with a degree in vocal performance and recently toured with the University Singers in South Korea. Lawson performed numerous roles with the University of Alabama Opera Theatre, including Casilda in The Gondoliers and Lucy Willow in In A Garden. Christmas on the Square Grand Finale The Sumter County Chamber of Commerce and City of Livingston are hosting the Christmas on the Square Grand Finale Thurs., Dec. 1 at 5:15 pm on the Courthouse Square. You can sip on hot chocolate while listending to the UWA Band and Ensemble perform Christmas music. There will also be a surprise visit from Santa Clause and the Christmas Tree Lighting under the Bored Well. The children will also be able to decorate the Christmas Tree with their own ornaments or one provided by the Chamber. Please come out and join us in the Christmas Festivities! |
